It’s easy to feed stuff to the effects bus and then forget about it.
Don’t! It is especially important to EQ your reverbs.
It depends on the case of course but I usually do three things with reverbs:
- Cut everything below 200-300hz or even higher – don’t need the muddyness and rumble on reverbs.
- Apply a few dB’s of broad Q cut around 2000-7000hz – reduce shizzle to allow details in your main sounds (especially vocals) to come through better.
- Cut the highs if there are any – again they are unnecessary on most reverbs and only make your track sound less defined.
Remove what’s not needed and what’s left will shine. Simple.
